Description:
It is a bismuth-based eutectic fusible alloy made of four low-melting metals such as bismuth, tin, lead, and cadmium. It is also called Lipowitz's alloy or by the commercial names Cerrobend, Bendalloy, Pewtalloy and MCP 158. It has a low melting point, can be melted in boiling water, is easy to recycle and can be reused many times.
Application:
Wood's metal or Wood's alloy is used to make circuit fuses, automatic fire extinguishing and explosion-proof safety devices.
Install the fuse in the switch box. If a short circuit or overload occurs in the circuit and the current is too large, the wire will heat up. When the temperature rises to 70°C, the fuse will blow, which protects electrical equipment and prevents fires.
Wood's metal is commonly used as a filler when bending thin-walled metal tubes. For this use the tubing is filled with molten Wood's metal. After this filler solidifies, the tubing is bent. The filler prevents the tube collapsing. The Wood's metal is then removed by heating, often by immersion in boiling water.
Useful as a low-temperature solder or casting metal, Wood's metal is also used as valves in fire sprinkler systems. Other applications include treating antiques, as a heat transfer medium in hot baths, and in making custom shaped apertures and blocks for medical radiation treatment.
